Silicon Photonics Design Engineer
Location:Carlsbad, California, US
Area of InterestEngineer - Hardware
Technology InterestInternet of Everything
What You'll Do
We need an inventor who is passionate about how silicon photonics can transform the world of communications. Using the technology developed in one of the world’s premier foundries, you’ll expand the photonic device library used to build Cisco’s next-generation optical transceiver modules. To deliver high-performance and manufacturable optical circuit designs, you’ll architect, simulate, and validate novel photonic devices and subsystems and characterize their performance.
Because you’ll gain insight into all aspects of transceiver manufacturing – the CMOS process, opto-electronic circuit design, high-speed test systems, light source, and packaging – you’ll have ample opportunities to identify process and design improvements to push the performance of the photonic SOCs to their physical limits. Your innovative ideas will be key for Cisco’s leadership in optical interconnect technologies.
Who You'll Work With
When you work with us, you’ll be part of an inventive and collaborative team who solves critical puzzles to enable each new product. Our team members come from all over the world and their approaches to solving daily challenges is just as diverse. You will also collaborate with the electronic circuit design and packaging teams and identify design trade-offs to optimize product performance.
Who You Are
Your colleagues see you as a strong teammate who actively gives constructive feedback to advance the projects of the entire team. You have excellent written and oral communication skills and exceptional creativity in problem-solving.
At minimum, we expect you to have a Ph.D. in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or a Masters Degree with 4 years of experience in an engineering role. You should also have in-depth knowledge of various integrated optics platforms. You have designed passive and active silicon photonics components (e.g. grating couplers, photodetectors, modulators, filters) using modeling software tools (e.g. Lumerical, Silvaco, Athena, Photon Design), and used CAD layout tools (e.g. Cadence Virtuoso).
You have familiarity with optical test equipment (e.g. tunable lasers, detectors, OSA, VNA) and microwave measurement techniques, as well as with statistical analysis tools (e.g. JMP). Your experience with photolithography, deposition, and etching equipment will help you design process-insensitive components. Performing high-speed optical transmission link characterization is another valuable skill you may have already attained.
We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.
At Cisco, each person brings their unique talents to work as a team and make a difference.
Yes, our technology changes the way the world works, lives, plays and learns, but our edge comes from our people.
- We connect everything – people, process, data and things – and we use those connections to change our world for the better.
- We innovate everywhere - From launching a new era of networking that adapts, learns and protects, to building Cisco Services that accelerate businesses and business results. Our technology powers entertainment, retail, healthcare, education and more – from Smart Cities to your everyday devices.
- We benefit everyone - We do all of this while striving for a culture that empowers every person to be the difference, at work and in our communities.
