What You'll Do
We need an inventor who is passionate about how silicon photonics can transform the world of communications. Using the technology developed in one of the world’s premier foundries, you’ll expand the photonic device library used to build Cisco’s next-generation optical transceiver modules. To deliver high-performance and manufacturable optical circuit designs, you’ll architect, simulate, and validate novel photonic devices and subsystems and characterize their performance.
Because you’ll gain insight into all aspects of transceiver manufacturing – the CMOS process, opto-electronic circuit design, high-speed test systems, light source, and packaging – you’ll have ample opportunities to identify process and design improvements to push the performance of the photonic SOCs to their physical limits. Your innovative ideas will be key for Cisco’s leadership in optical interconnect technologies.

You will also collaborate with the electronic circuit design and packaging teams and identify design trade-offs to optimize product performance.

At minimum, we expect you to have a Ph.D. in Optics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or an M.S. with 4 years of experience in an engineering role. You should also have in-depth knowledge of various integrated optics platforms. You have designed passive and active silicon photonics components (e.g. grating couplers, photodetectors, modulators, filters) using modeling software tools (e.g. Lumerical, Silvaco, Athena, Photon Design), and used CAD layout tools (e.g. Cadence Virtuoso).
You have familiarity with optical test equipment (e.g. tunable lasers, detectors, OSA, VNA) and microwave measurement techniques, as well as with statistical analysis tools (e.g. JMP). Your experience with photolithography, deposition, and etching equipment will help you design process-insensitive components. Performing high-speed optical transmission link characterization is another valuable skill you may have already attained.
