At Cisco Meraki, we know that technology can connect, empower, and drive us. Our mission is to simplify technology so our customers can focus on what's most meaningful to them: their students, patients, customers, and businesses. We’re making networking easier, faster, and smarter with technology that simply works.
The modern world runs on the internet, and the internet cannot exist without its underlying infrastructure. Meraki makes setting up, managing, and maintaining that infrastructure easier than it has ever been before. Meraki enables connectivity everywhere from neighborhood cafes to education institutions to global hospitality groups operating thousands of sites.
The Opportunity:
You are an inspiring innovator, mentor, and coach, conversant and passionate about emerging opportunities. You lead by example and demonstrate excellence in collaboration and communication across engineering teams, with an interest in creative problem solving and a consistent track record for leading and directly chipping in to the launches of new platforms and/or transformational architecture changes. You are proficient at writing code and deploying it into a distributed architecture. You are also an effective spokesperson and champion for engineering teams, passionate about mentoring and developing engineers. You are an inspiring leader and a thorough problem solver who is equally comfortable and capable interacting with technologists as with senior business executives with the ability to articulate the value of the proposed solution. You value simplicity at scale and are dedicated to maintaining a culture of quality, reliability, security, and focused execution.
As a Principal Engineer You Will
Lead by example and are a hands-on architect and technical expert building systems alongside and with teams doing frontend work across engineering

Provide technical leadership for critical platform, library, and system development
Design, build consensus, and contribute to the implementation of libraries, and frameworks, and processes that enable frontend development across engineering
Work with PM, engineering, UX and other partners to set product vision and define roadmaps and goals spanning multiple organizations or teams
Partner with senior engineers and leadership to guide best practices
Help nurture a culture focused on the best possible customer experience
Work in distributed architectures and with data structures and algorithms
Build and deploy critical, 24x7 solutions in a SaaS environment
Lead and/or participate in office hours, give talks, and generate documentation and training to grow engineers' skills
Architect and validate solutions to address security challenges
Problem solve, debug, and fix elusive bugs with advanced development skills
We are looking for:
You have 12+ years of related experience and are recognized as a strategic problem solver in internal and external forums, with extensive technical, market, and business expertise.
Experience with modern application development methodologies (CI/CD, Agile/DevOps)
Familiarity across the stack, with a particular interest and deep expertise in frontend technologies
Experience with React and other frontend frameworks
Ability to get consensus and set technical direction within a large engineering organization
Expert in building from scratch and/or evolving large web applications
Adaptability combined with the experience to identify and evaluate opportunities for improvement
Passionate about solving real customer problems and have experience prototyping, shipping, and iterating on new products
A focus on the users of a system (whether developers using a framework or customers using the product)
You take a focused, organized approach to development, testing, and quality.
We work with a mix of languages and technologies at Meraki including Ruby (and Rails), JavaScript, and TypeScript. (There's some Scala, Go, and other languages on the backend.) We're using React as our primary framework in JavaScript. We know that everyone's tech stack is different and that skills translate. If you’ve used comparable technologies and like learning new things there's a good chance you’re an ideal fit for the team.
Bonus points for experience in:
Introducing design systems to an existing application
Evolving and improving frontend testing practices
Frontend deployment infrastructure (CDNs, versioning, etc.)

The health and safety of Cisco's employees, customers, and partners is a top priority. Our goal is to protect and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 infection for strong business resiliency during the pandemic. Therefore, Cisco requires all new hires to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in the U.S., unless otherwise prohibited by applicable law, and in countries where COVID-19 vaccination is legally required. The company will consider legally required accommodations/exceptions for medical, religious, and other reasons as per the requirements of the role and in accordance with applicable law. Additional information will be provided to candidates about the requirements and accommodation process at the offer time based on region
When available, the salary range posted for this position reflects the projected hiring range for new hire, full-time salaries in U.S. locations, not including equity or benefits. For non-sales roles the hiring ranges reflect base salary only; employees are also eligible to receive annual bonuses. Hiring ranges for sales positions include base and incentive compensation target. Individual pay is determined by the candidate's hiring location and additional factors, including but not limited to skillset, experience, and relevant education, certifications, or training. Applicants may not be eligible for the full salary range based on their U.S. hiring location. The recruiter can share more details about compensation for the role in your location during the hiring process.
U.S. employees have access to quality medical, dental and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan with a Cisco matching contribution, short and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance and numerous wellbeing offerings. Employees receive up to twelve paid holidays per calendar year, which includes one floating holiday, plus a day off for their birthday. Employees accrue up to 20 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) each year and have access to paid time away to deal with critical or emergency issues without tapping into their PTO. We offer additional paid time to volunteer and give back to the community. Employees are also able to purchase company stock through our Employee Stock Purchase Program.
Employees on sales plans earn performance-based incentive pay on top of their base salary, which is split between quota and non-quota components. For quota-based incentive pay, Cisco pays at the standard rate of 1% of incentive target for each 1% revenue attainment against the quota up to 100%. Once performance exceeds 100% quota attainment, incentive rates may increase up to five times the standard rate with no cap on incentive compensation. For non-quota-based sales performance elements such as strategic sales objectives, Cisco may pay up to 125% of target. Cisco sales plans do not have a minimum threshold of performance for sales incentive compensation to be paid.
